My pieces aim to start a conversation around the skin condition vitiligo and illuminate the beauty of it. I have created interactive and wearable pieces by combining sun-reactive pigments and alternative materials.
Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease that causes the bodies immune system to destroy random melanocytes in the skin. This stops melanin, or skin pigment, from being produced, causing white patches to appear.
Being such a rare and visually obvious condition proves difficult for people with vitiligo as a majority of people don’t understand what it is and assume it’s something bad and ugly. Vitiligo is the opposite of this as it’s such a unique and beautiful condition that should be understood, accepted, and adored.
I believe jewellery can be used in such a way to make people feel more comfortable in their own skin and be used as a talking point for skin conditions. People often fear to ask about something different, so wearing jewellery inspired by your own condition can be a subtle and comfortable way to talk about it and find the beauty in your own skin.
